Detroit Arsenal

Home of the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command Headquarters, the Detroit Arsenal  has played a vital role in our Nation’s defense since the start of World War II.  Located in Warren, Mich., the Detroit Arsenal sprang up seemingly overnight in 1940 with the single focus of producing medium tanks.  Today, the Detroit Arsenal remains ever vigilant as the host for organizations that provide over 70 percent of the systems used in the military.

Fathers play an integral role in their children’s lives, and Sonora Smart Dodd wanted a day to celebrate that. If there was a day dedicated to celebrating mothers, she wanted a day to honor her father William Jackson Smart, a single father of six and a Civil War veteran. With  help from the local YMCA, the first Father’s Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington, in 1910, with support in the United States resulting in attention from several presidents.
